In 2014–15, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art and The Serpentine Gallery’s Centre for Possible Studies co-produced the international artist residency From Neighbourhood to Neighbourhoods with support from Qatar-UK 2013 Year of Culture and the British Council.
From Neighbourhood to Neighbourhoods builds on five years of Serpentine Gallery's work on London's Edgware Road, where the Centre for Possible Studies has hosted artists, residents, screenings, and summer schools in once-empty buildings. As Mathaf's first residency programme, this work extends to Doha, linking artists with communities navigating rapid urban growth.
Four artists developed spent time between the two cities, exploring urban education and development. Recognizing artists as the center of thriving communities and cultural ecosystems, the residencies connect Edgware Road to its historic Gulf neighbourhoods — investigating shared spaces, values, and responsibility for our shifting cities.
